Today, I received the 10th posture in the Intermediate Series of the Ashtanga Yoga System from Teacher Mauricio. Kapotasana or the Pigeon Pose. This posture is the culmination of the Backbending sequence and possibly the most important posture in the Intermediate Series. It fully opens the chest and sternum area as per Gregor Maehle’s book, Ashtanga Yoga: The Intermediate Series.

Kapotasana was awsome. Many of the poses in Ashtanga Yoga, particularly the Primary and some of the Intermediate Series, are familiar in some variation or another. Most of them I tried at least a few times, if not practiced fairly regularly. Kapotasana, however, I’ve tried at least 2 times with a lot of help from my friends! Lol! I never thought it’s possible for me to reach my heels. I have never identified it as a natural backbender! I was blinded by my thoughts that my spine and shoulders are so tight to do it. But here it is! I’m so happy and I think that I’ll have a love-hate relationship with this asana. Let’s see. Forever grateful! 🙏Namasté

In the Ashtanga Yoga System, the First or the Primary Series is performed by all beginners and also Intermediate and Advanced Students on Friday. There is a designated day of the week to practice each of the Six Series and Friday is the Day for Primary.

One of my favorite postures in the Primary Series is Marichyasana A or the Pose Dedicated to Sage Marichi the Son of Brahma, the Creator.

Marichyasana A helps to primarily open the shoulders, chest and hips, three places we tend to feel “tightest” due to our daily habits of sitting, running and generally holding on to emotional “tightness” within these muscles. The chest and shoulders meanwhile, are places we tend to gather tension due to long periods of time spent sitting and typing in the office, creating a rounded upper back and collapsed chest, effectively decreasing our ability to breathe fully. There are four variations of this posture in the Primary Series. 🙏Namasté

Marichyasana D is the final pose in the Set of Marichyasanas in the Primary Series of the Ashtanga Yoga System. This twist is a very challenging pose to get into and may require lots of patience to complete, well at least for me. Twists are important asanas for our spinal health, they keep our spine flexible and brings fresh blood supply to the spinal nerve. 

This pose have reinforced me the importance of patience, discipline, and commitment, as well as the courage to try again no matter how many times I fail. This is why we practice, we practice until we get it right. And then we practice, and practice some more. 🙏Namasté
