Yesterday’s Handstand Play in Nagsasa Cove

Adho Mukha Vrksasana or the Downward Facing Tree Pose is one of the most challenging pose for me to sustain.

Handstand, like all balancing poses, requires that you feel comfortable with instability. When faced with instability of any kind, physical or mental, most of us tend to recoil immediately and try to regain control by locking thighs in place. Ironically, this reaction only serves to make us more rigid and less able to make minute and sensitive adjustments to bring ourselves back into balance. Sometimes we need to focus on the process rather than the outcome. 🙏Namasté

Yoga Throwback 

It’s been a year now since I started practicing Yoga again and it’s been 3 months now since I started my Ashtanga Mysore Practice. A lot of things has changed in my emotional, spiritual, mental and physical being. But I totally saw a big difference when I shifted to Ashtanga Mysore Style practice. Moving into new poses when the teacher tells you is totally the difference between a Mysore style compared to a Led teaching type of yoga. This doesn’t overwhelm your body and you’ll definitely be surprised that you can do already a certain pose already with ease and steadiness once a new pose or asana is introduced.

The upper photo shows my Marichyasana A taken 10 months ago and the lower photo was taken earlier today during my Mysore practice.

Marichyasana A (Pose Dedicated to the Sage Marichi A) is an awesome stretch for the inner hip joints, but the first thing I noticed about this pose was the deep internal heat it builds in the core.  Extending through the sternum rather than the head, the fold is very active, and the thigh of the bent leg presses into the side for a good organ massage.  It’s a particularly satisfying position with the breath going strong. 🙏Namasté

Yoga Throwback

Morning Ashtanga Mysore Practice

A dropback, the term commonly used to describe the transitional movement of falling backward in space between Tadasana (Mountain Pose) and Urdhva Dhanurasana (Upward Bow Pose), is perfect for exploring the notion of process in yoga because the “pose” itself is a process. The dropping-back action is bracketed between precise beginning and end points, but the middle part is where the real juice is. This “in between” is where you need to stay alert as well as relaxed, loose yet organized, open to possibility yet clear about the direction you are heading. When you can do that, you are both practicing and being yoga.

The dropbacks come after each series of the Ashtanga Yoga System. You must be proficient in Urdhva Dhanurasana in order for you to execute the dropbacks with ease and steadiness. 🙏Namasté

Afternoon Gentle Flow Practice

I haven’t posted for almost 2 weeks now. My past weeks were abundant and overwhelming all at the same time. Thank God it’s a moon day today, meaning there’s no Ashtanga practice for me to rest. With so many things happening the past few weeks, my body gave up on me and i got sick last night. 

Although I still have a fever today, it does not mean that I’ll just slack in bed even though my body can still move. I took the courage to step on my mat to practice a gentle flow vinyasa and to sneak in one inversion asana.

The Supported Headstand or Salamba Sirsasana is the king of Asanas and cure for all that ails you. According to Mr. Iyengar, “regular and precise practice of Sirsasana develops the body, disciplines the mind, and widens the horizon of the spirit. One becomes balanced and self-restraint in pain and pleasure, loss and gain, shame and fame and defeat and victory.” (Light on Yoga) 🙏Namasté

Utpluthih or Tolasana is one of the Final three Lotus Flowers in the Ashtanga Yoga System. This pose builds upper body core strength dramatically, but it also requires strength to be able to hold the position. Utpluthih or the Scale Pose brings awareness of how much strength, discipline and balance is needed for other arm balancing poses, as well as cultivating focus. 🙏Namasté
