Afternoon Ashtanga Mysore Practice

Today I was able to complete the Ashtanga Primary Series with ease and steadiness. Although I’m still dealing with a sunburnt skin, the practice came in fluidly and I was able to finish in 1 hour and 15 minutes which rarely happens. My teacher gave the entire series to me already during our retreat in Baguio and it’s about time to polish these jewels that was given to me which I consider a gift.

Ubhaya Padangusthasana or the Take-Both-Big-Toes Posture is an organic embodiment of the yogic journey toward light, bliss and samadhi. With the face and feet lifting in the same direction, reaching toward the sun like a flower, the feeling is noble and forthright yet humble. Wrapping my fingers around my toes awakens both the animal and child spirit, and the excitement of holding the balance or risking a backward summersault is always exhilarating and comical! 🙏Namasté

Vasisthasana (a.k.a side plank or inclined plane posture). Vasisthasana is dedicated to the sage Vasistha, a family priest to the solar race of kings and the author of several Vedic hymns. The rivalry between Vasistha and Visvamitra, a royal sage and man of the warrior caste who by his piety and asceticism raised himself to brahman status, forms the subject of many legends (Light on Yoga, BKS Iyengar).

Vasisthasana works the arms, wrists, sides, outer legs, and low back strongly and brings a glorious stretch into the hip, groin, hamstring, and inner thigh of the raised leg. This pose is the first asana of the Third Series. Although we are not yet in that series sometimes it’s fun to play around with advance postures. 🙏Namasté

Adho Mukha Vrksasana or the Downward Facing Tree Pose is one of the most challenging pose for me to sustain.

Handstand, like all balancing poses, requires that you feel comfortable with instability. When faced with instability of any kind, physical or mental, most of us tend to recoil immediately and try to regain control by locking thighs in place. Ironically, this reaction only serves to make us more rigid and less able to make minute and sensitive adjustments to bring ourselves back into balance. Sometimes we need to focus on the process rather than the outcome. 🙏Namasté
